L-head six-cylinder engine with dual ignition, three-speed manual transmission, semi-elliptic front and three-quarter elliptic rear leaf spring suspension, two-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 131"J. Frank Duryea is rightfully recognized as the father of the American automobile industry. After making a pioneer journey in a car built with his brother Charles, in Springfield, Massachusetts, in September 1893, the two formed the Duryea Motor Wagon Company and turned out thirteen near-identical cars. By 1898, however, the brothers had split, and in 1900 Frank designed another automobile he called the Hampden, after a nearby town. The following year, Duryea's prototype Hampden came to the notice of the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company of nearby Chicopee Falls. The name of the car was changed to Stevens-Duryea and production began toward the end of 1901.A light two-cylinder, five horsepower runabout, the Stevens-Duryea featured a three-speed sliding gear transmission and wire wheels. A four-cylinder model arrived in 1905 and a six the following year. Stevens-Duryeas were always quality cars with prices to match. The initial models were priced at $1,200 at a time when popular runabouts sold for half that. The 1905 Model R four-cylinder touring listed for $2,500 and the six-cylinder Model S of 1906 at double that figure, right up in Packard territory. The late historian Beverly Rae Kimes described the Stevens-Duryea approach as "prestigious conservatism", aptly echoed by the companys motto, "There is No Better Motor Car". Production hovered around 100 cars a year, most of them large touring and limousine models. Though purchased in the early 1920s by a syndicate headed by Ray M. Owen of Owen Magnetic, the company continued to build the same cars in tiny quantities as orders were received. Orders ceased around 1927 and so did the Stevens-Duryea.A fresh restoration from stem to stern, this Model C Stevens-Duryea is show quality throughout. The paint is tastefully done in dark blue with light gray pin striping and black accents. The black canvas top has a gray cloth liner and glass rear window. A rear-mounted trunk stores a set of side curtains. The brightwork is nickel and is flawless. The two side lamps have green side lenses in addition to the forward-facing clear lens. Headlamps bear the Stevens-Duryea script, as does the accessory Boyce MotoMeter. The seats are upholstered in black diamond-tuft leather and are flawless. The five-spoke wood-rim steering wheel is beautifully restored, and there is a "Triumph" fuel gauge located between the driver and passenger. A Warner Autometer, located on the left-side bulkhead next to the front seat passenger, contains a speedometer, odometer (currently reading 58,002) and a trip odometer. Other instrumentation includes a Westinghouse voltmeter, a pressure gauge for the Kellogg air starting system and a Boston Clock Company timepiece. The engine, with six-cylinders cast in pairs, is beautifully restored to show quality. Twin ignition features two spark plugs per cylinder, and an electric starting system has been unobtrusively fitted for driver convenience. The undercarriage is similarly restored to show quality. The car has been shown at the prestigious Eyes On Design show in Michigan, and comes complete with photocopies of the Model C operating instructions and the price list from a parts manual. No more than ten Model C Stevens-Duryeas are known to exist. This is a rare opportunity to acquire what is surely the best.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
