Wheelbase: 142"When James Ward Packard debuted his first car in 1899, he was just one of dozens of would-be automobile moguls. Though most of his early contemporaries fell by the wayside, by the mid-thirties the exceptional vehicles bearing his name were among the finest in the world. In 1934, America's pretentious super-rich may have driven Duesenbergs, Rolls-Royces and other exotica, but for most potential buyers of luxury transportation Packard was the king of the American road. Though the Depression meant low-cost motoring for millions, to those who did have money Packard was a car that required no compromises. It combined stunning good looks with industry-leading mechanical refinements and elegant appointments that simply had no superior.Packards were noted for their attention to artistic detail. The angle of the deeply vee'd radiator shell was mimicked by the headlamp lenses, and the top edges of both the headlamp and parking lamp lenses were subtly curved to match the distinctive Packard grille. In the centre of the dashboard sat the Packard crest, surrounded by that same iconic shape. On the road, a massive 142-inch wheelbase and balloon-like 7.50 x 17 tires isolated the passengers from all but the worst bumps. Packard also offered a Ride Control lever that allowed the driver to adjust the resistant of the hydraulic shocks from soft and cushy to a firmness that tightened handling and gave a true feel of the road. Under the hood, a regulator monitored and controlled oil temperature, allowing the use of the same viscosity lubricant year-round. The first full-flow filter, a larger pump and an oil pressure regulator further ensured things would, literally, run as smoothly as possible. The 1934 Packard Super Eight Convertible Victoria presented here was originally sold in Los Angeles. Beautifully restored, the striking maroon over darker maroon paint accentuates the powerful, flowing lines of the Dietrich-designed body, while the tan cloth convertible Victoria top, distinguished by its lack of rear-passenger side windows, offers extra rear seat privacy and gives the car a uniquely elegant roofline. The brightwork sparkles, the wide whitewalls glisten and the dual, metal-covered sidemount spare tires topped with chrome rear-view mirrors serve to accentuate the considerable length of the vehicle. The same can be said of the rear-mounted folding luggage rack. The tan leather interior is strikingly set off by rich, burled wood trim, a six-gauge control panel, and dual glove boxes set into either end of the wood-faced dash. Tan, cut-pile wool carpeting completes the sensation of being surrounded by only the finest materials. The car's overall impression is one of genuine elegance. It does not scream "look at me" the way some extravagant classics do, because it simply does not have to. Its lines, colors and accents automatically draw the eye and the pleasing harmony of the whole, plus the obvious craftsmanship that went into its creation, make it more than a very desirable classic car -- it is a genuine work of art.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
