L-head V12 engine with Stromberg downdraft carburetion featuring automatic cold start, three-speed synchromesh manual transmission, shaft drive with hypoid rear axle, and four-wheel adjustable vacuum-assisted drum brakes. Wheelbase: 142"At the onset of the Great Depression, Packard continued to dominate the American fine car market, and retained a strong balance sheet. Remaining focused on the fine car segment, the company met the competitive threat from Cadillac and Lincoln directly with the new Twin Six for 1932. The happy result of an aborted front-wheel-drive, V12-powered project, the Twin Six featured a range of spectacular custom bodies built upon two wheelbase lengths. Renamed the Twelve in 1933, the new car was, in many ways, the signature car of the classic era, featuring finely tailored lines, elegant appointments, a refined chassis, and a powerful, whisper-quiet engine. With the release of the 11th series in 1934, the Packard Twelve was now built upon three wheelbases. It was among the last Packard models to feature flowing fenders and classic lines before the advent of the more streamlined look of the late 1930s. Offered over a range of 11 body styles, the 1934 Packard Twelve represents what most knowledgeable collectors consider the absolute pinnacle of Packard design and engineering. While millions of Americans could not afford an automobile, a market remained for wealthy buyers who could afford the finest automobiles. One such buyer was William Wrigley Jr., who began his rise to wealth in Philadelphia in 1891 by selling soap. He soon switched to baking powder before settling in on the product that would bring him fame and fortune -- chewing gum. The rest, as they say, is history, and the Wrigley chewing gum brand and its legacy survive to this very day. As a connoisseur of the best life had to offer, it was only natural that Mr. Wrigley would choose the 1934 Packard Twelve Formal Sedan that we are pleased to offer here. This stunning example was the subject of a painstaking, three-year restoration effort, beginning with a straight, rust-free and completely original car. The restoration was completed in 1995 by respected classic car restorer Jocko's, of Dearborn, Michigan, and it is reported that over $250,000 was spent to ensure that this Formal Sedan is one of the finest examples in existence. In addition, every part and component was either fully restored or replaced as required.Displaying a handsome dark blue finish, the exterior is complemented by dual side-mounted spare tires in hard cases with chrome-plated rear view mirrors, along with a rear trunk rack, and wide whitewall tires on chrome plated wire wheels. The passenger compartment, featuring light blue upholstery, continues to display its gleaming wooden dash, steering wheel and window trim, along with the jewel-like instrument cluster. The magnificent V12 engine was treated to a complete rebuild, and today it continues to exhibit Packard's legendary silent and vibration-free operation. The engine and bay are also refinished, and remain period correct in presentation, including all wires, hoses, and supporting components. The 1934 Packard Twelves are considered the most desirable of the classic-era vehicles due to their extraordinary driving characteristics and great design attributes. In the world of American Classics, this CCCA Full Classic continues to stand out as being among the very best.Auction House RM Auctions5 West Forest AveYpsilanti, MI United States 48197519.352.4575Important NoticeRM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
